Why do we give the Ray Pillman award?
Ray Pillman may not be a household name to many of our members, but his contributions to Coastal Recreation in BC are too many to list in this small space. Ray was a member of the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC and of SKABC. Since the mid ‘80’s he has worked patiently and diligently on many conservation and recreation projects including the establishment of the South Moresby Archipelago National Park Reserve. His contributions that were driven by his love of the outdoors, our coast, conservation, and the amazing province in which we live.
2025 Winner John Kimantas
Tribute by Karina Younk (Chair of the Board) presented at the 2025 AGM
John was a key player in the early visions for BC Marine Trails. Between 2005 and 2007 his coastal recreation guides became a valuable tool for planning our excursions. Later, a series of waterproof “deck topper” maps allowed us to take condensed versions of his books with us on our trips.
What you may not know is that John, as our first contract employee, worked closely with the Board to research, debate, and draft our Marine Trails Code of Conduct. He initiated BCMT’s engagement efforts with First Nations to seek concurrence for all sites on our map. John continues to encourage paddlers to consult the BCMT map for updates on respectful visitation in First Nations’ traditional territories.
