BC Marine Trails: Preserving BC coastal access for small craft users.

Group Flotilla and Grand Opening

Join us in a huge group paddle from Swy-a-lana Lagoon in Nanaimo to cross Nanaimo Harbour to Newcastle Island to converge on the opening ceremonies of the Salish Sea Marine Trail. Be welcomed by the Snuneymuxw First Nation to their traditional territory in a once-in-a-lifetime demonstration of Coast Salish culture. Salute the uniting of past and present and future as we celebrate thousands of years of transiting the BC coastline by paddle and set the stage for the future "trade route" along the Salish Sea.

Paddlers of all types will converge in the waters off Swy-a-lana and paddle as a group across the harbour to start at 1:30 p.m. The group will be welcomed while still offshore by the Snuneymuxw and acknowledge the welcome with a group salute of paddles before landing to the beat of traditional Coast Salish welcome drums.

Note that the paddle will be accompanied by Search and Rescue vessels and Nanaimo Port Authority vessels as well as guides in paddlecraft to ensure safe transit through Nanaimo Harbour.

The flotilla:

Join us by paddlecraft of any type. Meet in the water off Swy-a-lana for a short trip into the Salish Sea to the shores of Newcastle Island Provincial Park. Paddlers taking part in the weekend activities on Newcastle Island can use the lunch hour for a paddling break to cross the harbour and converge on the assembly point between the Newcastle Island ferry dock at Swy-a-lana and the Walking-Fishing Pier. Kayakers arriving for just the flotilla can launch at numerous locations, the main location being the Brechin Boat Ramp where you'll find a marine trail kayak launch lane!

The grand opening:

Once the flotilla nears the Newcastle Island shore immediately adjacent to the boat ramp, the grand opening location will be evident in the form of the welcoming totem. Once nearshore, paddlers are asked to raise their paddles in salute as we are welcomed by the Snuneymuxw to their traditional territory as part of the marine trail. Once welcomed, paddlers will be able to land and make their way to the grand opening platform at the carved welcome pole to listen to the opening ceremonies, which will last about half an hour. After that the BC Marine Trails will be hosting a social event with light refreshments before the ticketed traditional Coast Salish dinner and then the keynote speakers.

The post grand opening social event:

Join us for an informal gathering after the grand opening for snacks and refreshments. Sponsored by Alberni Outpost.
