Gibsons Landing: Destination

No vote

Shop, stroll, and dine, all against the backdrop of stunning views of Howe Sound and vistas of the coastal mountains – this is Gibsons Landing. Charming stores, art galleries, and restaurants/cafés line the Landing, while Winegarden Waterfront Park offers a place to relax and soak in the ambiance.

Best known for the part it played in CBC’s famed The Beachcombers, Gibsons Landing is a piece of Canadian television history, reflected in Molly’s Reach Restaurant located in the heart of the Landing.

Kayakers may be drawn here to paddle in sheltered inlets and bays while observing an array of wildlife. Day trips to Gambier and Keats Island are made easy on the foot passenger service from the Langdale Ferry, or by Gibsons Harbour Ferry or Sunshine Coast Water Taxi from the government dock in Gibsons Landing.

Beachcomb, swim or rest on one of the quiet and sheltered beaches: Armours, Georgia, Hopkins Landing, Soames, Granthams Landing, or Secret Beach.

Paddle over to Gibsons Landing:

Can a little town be too successful? Well, it can be if you measure car traffic compared to available parking spaces. This is a chronic problem for Gibsons in particular, so paddlers might not find Gibsons the best location to start a kayaking trip, and instead should probably consider choosing for a primary BC Marine Trails launch location better suited for starting long-term trips so your parked car doesn't add to the congestion.

But that doesn't mean paddlers can't enjoy Gibsons! In fact, we're turning it around and suggesting you make Gibsons Landing your destination. Do this by leaving the car at home.

Our solution: Walk-on at Horseshoe Bay and paddle-off at the Langdale Ferry Terminal. Do this as a day trip by bringing your kayak, SUP or other paddlecraft on at Horseshoe Bay, then navigate the Howe Sound shoreline the short distance to downtown Gibsons Landing. You are welcome to tuck into the beach behind the Gibsons Marina during your visit, or consider Winegarden Waterfront Park. Enjoy the market, shops, restaurants  and quaint charm of this historic waterfront community, then paddle home. Or make a weekend of it and stay at nearby accommodation in Gibsons, or at camp at Plumper Cove Marine Provincial Park. This is a great way to experience this part of the Sunshine Coast without worrying about getting a car across.

Trip options from Gibsons

If you do want to explore from the Gibsons area, you will probably want to head into the heart of the Sea to Sky Marine Trail and make use of the sites that dot Howe Sound. This is a highly recommended vacation destination and paddling route.

The BCMTNA is currently reworking the Sea to Sky Marine Trail web pages and so will be adding trip routes and recommended itineraries as part of that project. Stay tuned!
