Nestled between the open waters of the Georgia Strait and the calm waters of Sechelt Inlet, Sechelt is conveniently located jsut two hours north of Vancouver, but feels a world away. Discover its small-town friendliness, a wealth of outdoor activities, stunning scenery and a multitude of services.

Sechelt makes an ideal Salish Sea Marine Trail gateway, either for nearby day trips to enticing beaches and islands, or longer excursions involving the most remote and wild stretch of the Salish Sea Marine Trail. In that regard, it is definitely the place to begin an adventure itinerary!

Troubleshooting transportation:

Sechelt is accessible by ferry from the mainland by using the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal to reach Langdale. However, the town is also well-served by floatplane. Harbour Air can help fulfill logistics including kayak rentals and transportation, especially for the North Salish Sea Route between Sechelt and Nanaimo. Other service providers are also available for kayak rentals, tours and other services.

If you do drive here, the primary launch location in Sechelt is Friendship Park. In addition, most of the secondary launch locations offer good access to strategic locations with parking roadside and/or nearby for long-term trips.

Trails development: it's ongoing!

The Salish Sea Marine Trail passes only on the outer coast of Sechelt along the Strait of Georgia, and does not include trips into Sechelt Inlet. The BC Marine Trails Network is proposing to the shíshálh Nation a cooperative route that would link Sechelt Inlet, Jervis Inlet and the Sunshine Coast shoreline as a loop. Stay tuned.

Trip suggestions:

Easy to moderate day trips:

Sechelt Inlet explorations: With a launch from Porpoise Bay wharf or nearby Porpoise Bay Provincial Park, the inlet makes a relatively sheltered location for an interesting trip into a mountainous, fjord-like area. This area is currently in the early stage of a BCMTNA marine trails plan. Watch for more as the BCMTNA works on a route through this region.

Sunshine Coast Sun and Sand Day Trip: The Sunshine Coast shoreline here is dotted with pocket sand beaches that make a great place to relax as part of a day paddle out of Friendship Park. Take your pick of destinations.

Expedition options:

Jedediah Adventure Getaway: This would make a great getaway for anywhere from a few days to a full week or more. Set off from Sechelt and head into the great wilds of the central Strait of Georgia.
