Ever wonder what causes wind?

May 25 @ 7:00 pm 8:30 pm

On May 25th at 7:00pm come join Ross Macdonald, Senior Meteorologist, Environment Canada, in a conversation about marine weather.

This event is both live and via Zoom. The SISKA meeting will be at the Garth Homer Centre, 813 Darwin Ave Saanich, where we will connect over the internet with Ross and use the large screen to show his presentation. Folks can join us either at the centre or from home via Zoom. This will be our last regular meeting until the fall, as SISKA usually takes a summer break from monthly meetings.

Presentation Description: Ever wonder what causes wind? And how terrain effects it? Ever wonder what speeds strong wind warnings begin and when they get upgraded to gale force? What about the accuracy of weather predictions? Join Environment and Climate Change Canada senior meteorologist Ross Macdonald in a conversation involving all aspects of marine weather and marine weather forecasting for coastal B.C. waters.

Bio of Speaker: Ross Macdonald is an Environment and Climate Change Canada senior meteorologist with 14 years of experience working at the Pacific Storm Prediction Centre in Vancouver. He has developed a deep understanding of west coast weather with over a decade of experience writing coastal B.C. marine forecasts as well as consulting mariners directly on Environment and Climate Change Canada’s One-on-one marine consultation phone line. Ross believes the key to improving forecast service is through public education and communications to users. Outside of work Ross is an outdoors enthusiast; enjoying the very best that B.C. has to offer including kayaking, hiking, and trail running.
