The Salish Sea Marine Trail officially opened in September, 2017, but the work is still continuing behind the scenes.
The route to link Victoria and Vancouver via a blueway as part of the Trans Canada Trail is open and ready to be paddled, but much work remains to be done.
In particular, the BC Marine Trails network is negotiating with BC Parks to create new campsites for marine trail use at a number of locations along the route. This is a detailed, lengthy process that could in time significantly increase the recreational capacity of the south BC coast.
In addition, the BCMTNA is continuing to examine options for locations along the Sunshine Coast, a stretch made problematic due to the high percentage of private property and the lack of suitability for marine trail campsites at the few existing park locations.
